The Spa 24 Hours, introduced in 1924, marked the beginning of endurance racing at Spa-Francorchamps. In addition to the Nürburgring, Spa-Francorchamps hosted a 24-hour race for touring cars and GTs and an endurance race for sports cars and GTs.
The 24-hour race was a significant part of the inaugural World Sports Car Championship in 1953, the last time it was held until 1964. During this period, the Coupe de Spa, a minor sports car race, laid the foundation for the later 1000 km (now 6-hour) race.
The first Spa Grand Prix was held in 1954 and in 1963 it became part of the World Sportscar Championship, extending to a 500 km format. However, from 1966 onwards, the name Spa Grand Prix was no longer used, and the race transitioned to a 1000 km format, following the models of Nürburgring and Monza. The original 14 km track, used until 1975, posed safety concerns, leading to the discontinuation of the race after that year.
In 1982, the 1000 km race was revived after essential safety modifications, including shortening the track to 7 km. The race’s distance was temporarily reduced to 480 km in 1989 and 1990. However, due to the decline of the World Sportscar Championship (WSC), the “1000 km” was discontinued after 1990, predating the closure of the WSC.
The race returned in 1999 as part of the SportsRacing World Cup, adopting a 2-hour, 30-minute time limit. Subsequently, the 1000 km race underwent various iterations, including joint events with the British GT Championship (2003), inclusion in the Le Mans Series (2004), and participation in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (2011). Since 2012, the race has been a staple of the FIA World Endurance Championship, transitioning to a six-hour format.
Jacky Ickx, a racing legend, holds the record for the most Spa-Francorchamps wins, securing victory five times in 1967, 1968, 1974, 1982, and 1983. Notably, alongside Derek Bell, Ickx is one of two drivers to triumph in the 1000 km on both the original and current circuits. The Spa-Francorchamps endurance races stand as a testament to motorsport’s rich history and evolution at this iconic Belgian circuit.
